Following the creative path

Dev Report 12/30/06

So far implementing my new site in Drupal is going well. Each time I think Drupal is too restrictive I find that I just didn't know how to use it. So far I'm using the following core modules and contrib modules:

contact
help
image
image_gallery
img_assist
menu
page
path
profile
search
story
taxonomy
tracker
upload
views
views_rss
views_theme_wizard
views_ui

I'm runinng Drupal 4.7.3 so it's hard to tell what's core and what's not. I know I downloaded and installed the following contrib modules:
image
img_assist
views

Very impressed with img_assist and the flexibility to use it with all different input formats. I had trouble at first because I'm using Full HTML input format for several key pages. At first, images uploaded using img_assist would display only with input format Filtered HTML. Finally I took the time to search drupal.org which solved my problem.

You have to manage the input formats too.
Go to
administer - input formats
To see img_assist images in Full HTML, click configure to the right of the Full HTML in the list of input formats.
Check the box Inline images in the Filters section et voila! Pics and Full HTML.

1 year of lessons

After 1 year of fiddle lessons, I'm considering purchasing my own.

Playing the fiddle is more fun the more I practice. I know lots of songs now:

St. Anne's Reel
Old Joe Clark
Faded Love
Tennessee Waltz
Cripple Creek
Down Water

Maybe missing some...I'll have to ask my teacher, Paul Elliott (awesome teacher).

Specialized Domain Names

Myrna Dunlop's site now has additional domain names which support better search engine optimization:

* www.counselingbellevue.com
* www.counselingbellevue.net
* www.counselingeastside.com
* www.counselingeastside.net
* www.counselingeastsideservices.com
* www.therapyeastside.com

These additional domains allow Myrna to keep her personal domain, www.myrnadunlop.com so it is personal. Search engines, on the other hand, now have a clear idea of what her web site is about. Since the initial changes were made some referrals have come directly from the web site. With these additional domains, more referrals can be expected.

New Business Site with Blogs and more

A new business promoting a new book and consulting services wanted more than a brochure but had a limited budget. A custom Administration Panel was developed, so they can edit pages instead of paying someone else to do it. In addition, open source (GPL) survey and blog software were installed. The front-end design was integrated into both software programs, so a familiar look was provided throughout the site yet kept costs down by using existing programs.

More Search Engine Optimization

Myrna Dunlop has a web site describing her work as a psychotherapist. She was not getting many referrals from the web site. We revamped the content simplifying it for visitors. Now they can quickly grasp what Myrna does and what they need to do to get started. In addition, we improved the site so that search engines better understand the main focus of her web site's content.
